Running injuries slowing you down?🏃‍➡️

City to Surf came around quickly this year 😱

And Sydney Marathon is just one month away!

Are you currently training? De-loading?

Dodging the runners in the streets of Bondi?

Lots of runners, experienced and amateur, make mistakes with their training plans.

This is where injuries tend to poke their heads out…

The most common running injuries we see as Physiotherapists:

  • Anterior knee pain (runner’s knee)

  • ITB Syndrome

  • Tendinopathy (sometimes referred to as Tendinitis) - Achilles, tibialis posterior, peroneal

  • Shin Splints

  • Bone Stress response —> stress fractures

  • Gluteal tendinopathy +/- bursitis

  • Hip joint irritation

So when should you seek help?

  1. Normal post run pain should be gone in 24-48 hours
This is MUSCLE PAIN, you know, the quad pain you get when going down stairs or sitting in a low chair after a run. If the pain is more around a joint, or persists in a particular area, have it looked at!

  2. Discomfort or pain shouldn’t affect performance
If your pain is actually slowing you down, not your lungs or burning muscles, it may indicate a bigger problem.

  3. If you’ve had a particular problem before, and it feels like it is starting again
Get it assessed! The biggest risk factor for any particular injury, is having had that injury before

  4. Pain starting to affect other aspects of your life, not just running
You shouldn’t be noticing discomfort when at the office, or walking to the train/bus. If you feel your running niggles are starting to creep into every day life, have it looked at.
